Design Concept
The design direction is a modern dark theme kitchen with a strong and premium visual identity. Instead of using only one dark material, we combined black glass doors with grey melamine panels to create contrast, depth and better balance.
The black glass doors give the upper cabinet a sleek reflective finish, while the grey melamine panels add a textured, practical and easier-to-maintain surface. This combination prevents the kitchen from looking too flat or overly heavy.
The integrated breakfast table was designed as a flexible counter for light meals, coffee preparation and additional working space. The base cabinet below also provides extra storage, which improves daily convenience for the homeowner.
For the wood partition, the herringbone design creates a strong feature element. The hidden door allows the partition to function practically without breaking the design continuity.
Design Challenges
The first challenge was creating a dark theme kitchen that still felt comfortable and not too heavy. A fully black kitchen can look premium, but it can also make the space feel smaller if not balanced properly.
The second challenge was integrating the breakfast counter without disturbing movement between the kitchen and dining area.
The third challenge was the hidden door. A hidden door must align properly with the surrounding partition, otherwise the gap line, door swing and laminate pattern can look obvious or poorly finished.
The fourth challenge was material matching. The black glass, grey melamine, countertop, partition laminate and lighting had to work together as one complete interior concept.
Our Solution
We balanced the dark kitchen concept by mixing reflective black glass with grey melamine texture. This gives the kitchen a premium look while keeping the design practical for long-term use.
The breakfast table was integrated with the base cabinet to create a useful working and serving counter without wasting space. Additional storage was built below to support daily kitchen use.
For the wood partition and hidden door, we used solid plywood as the main structure and finished it with Topmix high pressure laminate in a herringbone pattern. This improves durability and gives the partition a more distinctive design feature.
Soft-closing fittings, DTC hinges and BLUM drawer systems were used to improve cabinet operation, reduce impact during daily use and provide a smoother user experience.
Final Outcome
The completed project at The Clovers, Sungai Ara, Bayan Lepas, Penang delivers a bold, modern and functional kitchen space. The combination of black glass doors, grey melamine panels, black countertop and herringbone hidden door partition creates a strong dark interior concept while still supporting practical daily living.
