PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Nippon Paint Micaceous Iron Oxide (MIO) is a high-quality, solvent-based alkyd-based protective coating pigmented with micaceous iron oxide. It is specifically engineered to provide maximum protection for structural steelwork in harsh, corrosive environments. The unique lamellar (plate-like) structure of the MIO pigments forms a protective barrier that overlaps like scales on a fish, effectively shielding the substrate from UV rays, water penetration, and chemical pollutants. This coating is renowned for its exceptional durability and is widely used on bridges, storage tanks, transmission towers, and industrial steel structures where long-term maintenance intervals are required. It provides a distinct, slip-resistant metallic matte finish.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
-
Application Method: Apply using a Brush, Roller, or Conventional/Airless Spray.
-
Note on Method: Brush application is recommended for complex shapes and "stripe coating" of bolts and welds to ensure full coverage.
-
Mixing: Stir the paint thoroughly before and during use, as the heavy MIO pigments tend to settle at the bottom of the can.
-
Cleaning: Clean all tools and equipment with Nippon General Purpose Thinner or Turpentine immediately after use.
-
Environmental Conditions: Do not apply if the relative humidity exceeds 85% or if the surface temperature is less than 3°C above the dew point.
RECOMMENDED COATING SYSTEM
For Steel Surfaces:
-
Primer (1 Coat): Red Oxide Primer / Zinc Phosphate Primer / Zinc Chromate Primer.
-
Undercoat (Optional): 9000 Speed Undercoat (if color uniformity is needed).
-
Topcoat (2 Coats): Micaceous Iron Oxide (MIO).
For Galvanized Steel:
SURFACE PREPARATION
-
General Cleaning: Surfaces must be dry, clean, and free from dirt, grease, oil, and loose matter.
-
Rust Removal: For new or rusted steel, surfaces should be abrasive blasted to Sa 2.5 (ISO 8501-1) for optimum performance. If blasting is not possible, mechanical cleaning to St 3 (wire brushing/grinding) is mandatory.
-
Previous Coatings: Remove all loose, flaking, or defective paint. Sound existing coatings should be lightly sanded to provide a mechanical key.
-
Dryness: Ensure the substrate is completely dry before application. Moisture trapped under the film can cause premature failure and corrosion.
